HEBuddy Gingerbread House NEW! The HEBuddy Gingerbread House will certainly be a crowd favorite!  A fun, creative holiday atmosphere fills the tent to the enjoyment of children of all ages! Children can also enjoy a reading from the HEBuddy Health Tales Book with special guests reader HEBuddy himself!

Children’s Gift of Love Giveaway  All children are invited to play bingo and enjoy an evening of fun, refreshments, and entertainment.  Children play a game and have an opportunity to win gifts. The child is able to select a donated gift of choice to give to their mother, father, brother, teacher, or any person in their life they choose.  The gift is then wrapped by volunteers and placed in a bag for the child to take home to place under the Christmas tree!  This beautiful display of giving shows children a lesson in giving to others and sharing during Christmas. For it is far better to give than to receive! Children have an opportunity to learn to give a gift of love!

Children’s Activity Area The Downtown Optimist Club provides the Children’s Activity Area with games, face painting and holiday activities for enjoyment.  Children will be assisted by more than 50 volunteers in writing postcards to Santa, making holiday greeting cards, and making gifts such as jewelry and crafts.  Santa always shows up to say a special ‘hello’ to the children.

The Main Entertainment Stage Enjoy a variety of live entertainment from church groups, school choirs and other area talent singing and performing holiday cheer for a festive day of crowd pleasing songs and special presentations.

Holiday Tree and Gingerbread Village The gingerbread and the holiday tree village is definitely a crowd favorite!  Beautiful gingerbread houses and designer creations are hand-made by businesses and residents, then  displayed for public viewing.  A creative holiday atmosphere is created in a tent decorated with lighted holiday trees.  Each tree is uniquely decorated by area schools, organizations and local community groups.  Trees and gingerbread houses are auctioned off to raise funds for the Harbor Lights Festival, so be sure to place your bid and support the gingerbread village!

Ceremonial Lighting of the Tree Harbor Lights wouldn’t be complete without the Tree of Lights.  Santa’s Motorcade will arrive in grand style led by festive twirlers, ornate floats ending with the guest of honor–Santa Claus.  The motorcade will travel down Shoreline Boulevard to the lighting ceremony.  Santa, along with several special guests of honor, flip the switch and the lighting of the Tree of  Lights officially begins the holiday season

Illuminated Boat Parade The Marina sparkles as boat captains, who have spent countless hours decorating their vessels, begin their regatta through the bay.  Professional announcing of the Boat Parade adds to the fun as luxury motorboats, sailboats, shrimp boats, tugs, and Coast Guard Cutters float through the Marina. Their captains and crews sing carols to entertain spectators and WOW the judges along Shoreline Drive.  Special awards are presented to winners in various categories.

Las Luces del Mar, A Christmas Festival is an annual faith-based celebration, which focuses on the unity of the church and the reason for the Christmas season, which is the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.  We are keeping Christ in CHRISTmas. The festival is FREE to the entire community and is held on Shoreline Boulevard in downtown Corpus Christi. This FREE Christmas festival features Christian artists and musicians, Praise and Worship bands from local churches, children’s activity areas, and food and gift vendors. Shake the Nation, the Worship Band for Bay Area Fellowship is one of the evening’s main entertainers. “We are happy that we can participate in this community event.” states Pastor Bil Cornelius.

The 3rd Annual Las Luces Christmas Festival heralds in the Christmas season with an inter-denominational prayer performed in unity by local church and spiritual leaders over the City of Corpus Christi, City Leaders, and the community.  The evening is designed to bring forth the spirit of unity and faith for the enrichment of our community.

“I am hoping many Christians will join us in being the living visible light of Christ at the Las Luces del Mar celebration. This Ecumenical gathering is a wonderful opportunity to remind our community that the true meaning of Christmas is the awesome mystery of God made man in

Christ Jesus. He is the light and fullness of revelation.”

–Fr. Bob Dunn, Parish Priest, Most Precious Blood Catholic Church

This year, the Marina Bayfront will sparkle with Floating Prayer Water Lanterns that will illuminate the Marina Bayfront unlike anything ever before seen in Corpus Christi. Lanterns can be personalized with handwritten prayers and wishes. The lanterns will be released by families/individuals into the shimmering waters.  This inspirational event will warm your heart and touch your spirit!  Floating Prayer Lanterns are available for purchase for $10 each and benefit the Las Luces del Mar Christmas Festival and the Asian Cultures Museum.

The Downtown Marina and Shoreline Boulevard provide the perfect setting for this glorious evening, so bundle up and bring out the entire family! We invite everyone to join us for an amazing evening in Corpus Christi as we celebrate the reason for the season – the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and lift up our City, Corpus Christi, in one night of unity as members of one body, ”The Body of Christ”

Corpus Christi Harbor Bridge Walk

By Alan S Albin

<< The bridge is there. Therefore it must be walked! >

On my first visit to the great State of Texas, in December 1998 when the purpose of my visit was to marry the love of my life, it crossed my mind that the Harbor Bridge would make a good walk. (By the way that was not uppermost in my mind that year – honest!) Now, I’m not from around here and admittedly had no experience of the heat and humidity which can be encountered in these parts. However I dismissed the nay sayers amongst my group as simply automobile loving Americans who just didn’t want to get out of their vehicles to “walk the bridge”.

So the seed was planted and each year, on arrival from the UK, I would be driven Northwards from the airport over the Harbor Bridge to Rockport and each time I would think “I’m going to walk the bridge this year.” Sadly, by the time I had enthused my mother in law to join in this venture, the walkways were closed to the public for security reasons (post 9/11). To cut a long story short we finally completed the walk on New Year’s Day 2010, started a monthly walking club, but had to stop after April due to the commencement of a painting and maintenance project.

In July of 2011 the BridgeWalk was adopted as the Sunday anchor event of the Corpus Christi First Initiative ( www.corpuschristifirst.com ) and TxDot were persuaded to open the pedestrian walkways for a special July 4th weekend walk. This took place on Sunday July 3rd when Mayor Joe Adame led some 200+ walkers over the bridge and back again.

The maintenance work on the Harbor bridge is now so far advanced that we have been given the go ahead to organize the monthly walk once again and so on the first Sunday of every month you can join the band of enthusiasts who regularly “walk the walk”.

On November 6th the BridgeWalkers were joined by Corpus Christi Roadrunners who fielded a good number of runners to precede the walkers over the bridge. This was so successful that they will be joining us every month.

The walk now commences from Heritage Park, in front of the Galvan House, where Parks and Recreation Department allow us the use of the Heritage Park parking lots and restroom facilities. Not everyone feels able to walk over the “High Bridge” and so we also offer an alternative route along Shoreline. Both routes are approximately 5K in length.

BridgeWalk route:

Heritage Park – Resaca – Broadway – Power St US181 access ramp – over the bridge Northwards – cross under the bridge on the North side – over the bridge Southwards – down the off ramp to Belden St – left onto Broadway – right to Resaca – back to Heritage Park.

BridgeWalk without a Bridge route:

Heritage Park – Resaca – Shoreline Southwards – Peoples Street T-Head – Shoreline Northwards – Resaca – Heritage Park.

Details of upcoming events are as follows:

  • Sunday December 4th – start at 7:30am in Heritage Park
  • Sunday January 8th – start at 7:30am in Heritage Park

There will also be a New Year’s Day walk which will probably start at 9am.
Please check the website for emerging details: www.bridgewalkcc.com

There is also a Facebook page entitled “We walked the Corpus Christi Harbor Bridge and survived” which is located at www.facebook.com/bridgewalkcc
If you make it over the bridge (on foot) join our club by “liking” this page.

K Space Contemporary’s Annual Open House

By Michelle Smythe

Get into the spirit of artful giving at K Space Contemporary! K Space Contemporary is hosting its 16th Annual K Space Open House, December 2 through December 4. Thanks to a grant from Grande Communications’ Passion and Commitment Investment Club, the 2011 Open House is new and improved! The event will feature fabulous holiday exhibitions, affordable art and gifts, artist demonstrations, hands-on projects, as well as refreshments and music.

Friday night (Dec. 2) kicks off, on ArtWalk, with an opening reception for four exhibitions from 5:30 to 9 pm. In the main gallery is a show of New Works from K Space and a show entitled A Little Christmas, which includes works of art by over 30 local artists. The title A Little Christmas refers to the size of the artworks, all of which will be no larger than 20” in any direction and for sale at modest prices.

The Artful Ornament, one of the most popular shows, opens in the gift shop. Sparkling, elegant, inspiring and fun… Ornaments make great Christmas gifts and collectables.   These unique, original ornaments are hand-made by local artists. Designs include various themes from Dia de los Muertos to fairytales to the glitter and shine of the holidays. Ornaments come in a variety of media from ceramic to paper maché to woven vines and bottle caps. Get your 2011 ornament here!

In the Hot Spot Gallery (3rd floor inside K Space Art Studios), Texas A & M University’s Student Art Association will be opening their annual show and sale. There will be lots of new talent to discover here. This show offers excellent works of art at great prices.

In addition to the exhibitions, K Space has planned new family friendly events for the Open House throughout the weekend. Hands-on projects, particularly popular with the kiddos, include silkscreen cards, cookie decorating and holiday ornaments. Items that are created can be taken home and used for the holidays. Art Demonstrations are planned by Amorette Garza and others.

At 1:00 pm on Saturday, Diana Byers will be demonstrating how to make cyanotype holiday cards with photograms, digital negatives and drawings on transparencies. Blank, pre-coated cards can be purchased by visitors who can then make their own beautiful blue-toned cards at home.

TAMUCC Printmakers and Professor Ryan O’Malley will be doing woodcut prints on t-shirts. T-Shirts can be purchased at the event, OR visitors may bring their own t-shirts for a reduced rate. Proceeds from this project will benefit the Oso Bay Biennial Art event in April 2012 organized by the TAMUCC-Art Department.

K Space Contemporary invites everyone of all ages to come out to the 16th Annual Open House and join the fun of holiday art! Hours for the Open House are: Friday, Dec. 2, 5:30 to 9 pm, Saturday, Dec. 3 and Sunday, Dec. 4, 1 to 5 pm. For more information and specific times of demonstrations, visit www.kspacecontemporary.org/exhibitions/.
